POJ Youth Host James River Clean Up
This weekend, the Youth Council of the Presbytery of the James hosted a James River cleanup event. Starting at Great Shiplock Park in Richmond, 45 people from 11 churches spread out along the Capital Trail, Chapel Island, and the Canal Path. Many bags of trash and recycling were cleared from this part of the James River, preventing these items from blowing or washing into the river, which could harm wildlife, affect water quality, and just plain old look ugly. Thanks to this fantastic group for a great day of fellowship and service!
What is Youth Council?
Youth Council, or YoCo, is a group of high school students from churches from all around the Presbytery of the James. This year we had 14 participants from 7 churches. They gather monthly to develop leadership through learning, volunteer service, and fellowship. As a youth-driven organization, YoCo members work toward their goals with guidance from Colleen Earp, Camp Hanover’s Director of Youth, Environment, and Service Ministries.
Camp Hanover’s connection with YoCo is an important one! Youth Council helps plan events like the youth retreats that take place and Camp Hanover and the service day at the James River. They lead worship, help run programs, and spread the word. We believe in order to provide the best possible programming for youth, there should be youth involved in the planning!
Youth Council Wants You!
Does Youth Council sound like something you’d be interested in? We’re looking for high school students (and adult leaders!) connected to the Presbytery of the James to join us for the 2016-2017 school year. We’ve got big plans for awesome retreats, more fellowship gatherings, and doing more service work at camp and in the community. We meet monthly at different churches around POJ, depending on where our participants are located. The application will be released at the end of the month.
